Ramzi Theory: Can the Side of Your Placenta Predict Gender?

What Is Ramzi Theory, and Where Did It Come From?
Ramzi theory (also spelled "Ramzi's method") says the side of the uterus where the chorionic villi attach, the early tissue that becomes the placenta, reveals the baby's sex:
- Placenta on the mother's right → boy
- Placenta on the mother's left → girl
The idea is attributed to Dr. Saam Ramzi Ismail, who described it in a paper reporting high accuracy from early scans. That work was never published in a peer-reviewed journal. It circulated as a self-published article on obgyn.net rather than passing through the review process other prenatal findings go through, and no major obstetric body (ACOG, RCOG or their equivalents) recognizes the method. The accurate framing is that the claim was never independently verified, and the figure you'll see quoted everywhere, often 97.5%, comes from the theory's own unreviewed source.
How Ramzi Theory Is Applied in Practice
The method needs an early scan that shows where the placenta is forming, before it grows large enough to wrap around and obscure its own origin.

Six weeks is the earliest window proponents claim, and it's almost always a transvaginal scan, because at this stage the pregnancy is a few millimeters across and an abdominal probe rarely gives usable detail. The "placenta" isn't a placenta yet; you're looking for a brighter, thicker area of the gestational sac wall where the chorionic villi are developing.
Ramzi theory at 8 weeks
Eight weeks is the more practical window and the one most people search for. The developing placenta is easier to spot as a distinctly brighter crescent along one side of the sac, and many clinics do a dating scan around now. Past roughly 10–12 weeks the method breaks down entirely: the placenta has grown across a wide area and often reads as anterior, posterior or fundal rather than clearly left or right.
The mirror problem, and why forum threads never agree
This is a real imaging problem rather than a rule you can solve by asking whether the scan was abdominal or transvaginal. The screen shows a sonographic slice rather than a photograph taken from the viewer's perspective, and its left-to-right orientation depends on the scanning plane, the probe's orientation marker, and how the machine maps that marker to the display.
That means a copied or printed image without clear orientation labels does not reliably tell you which screen edge corresponds to the mother's left or right. "Abdominal means flip it; transvaginal means read it as shown" is an internet shortcut rather than a universal ultrasound convention. The clinic may be able to confirm the orientation from the original study; a forum reader usually cannot.
Why Scientists Are Skeptical
Two separate problems, and both matter.
There's no proposed mechanism. Your baby's sex is decided at conception by whether the fertilizing sperm carried an X or a Y chromosome. Nothing about that chromosome pair has a known reason to steer where a blastocyst implants in the uterine wall. Implantation site is driven by where the embryo happens to land and the receptivity of the endometrium there. Ramzi theory has never offered a biological explanation for why sex would influence it, which leaves a correlation claim with nothing underneath.
When it was actually tested, it failed. A study presented in Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology examined 277 pregnancies and compared placental location with fetal sex. The placenta was midline in 78 cases; of the 89 with a right-sided placenta, 51% were male; of the 110 with a left-sided placenta, 57% were female. Statistically, that's noise: p = 0.43, relative risk 1.20 (95% CI 0.87–1.62). The authors concluded there is no relationship between placental location and fetal gender.
Read those percentages again. A 51/49 split on the right and 57/43 on the left is what you'd expect from random assignment in a sample this size, and the confidence interval crosses 1.0, meaning "no effect" is entirely consistent with the data.
So the practical accuracy of Ramzi theory is about 50%, not 97.5%. It feels more accurate than that because half the people who try it get the right answer and post about it, while nobody starts a thread to report that it failed.

How to Check Ramzi Theory on Your Own Scan
If you want to try it anyway, and plenty of people do knowing full well what it's worth, here's the method done properly:
- Use the earliest scan you have, ideally 6–8 weeks. Later than about 10 weeks and the placenta is usually too spread out to call a side.
- Ask whether the original image records maternal left and right. Scan type alone is not enough; you need orientation markers or confirmation from the clinic.
- Locate the developing placenta: a brighter, thicker, slightly grainy band along one part of the gestational sac wall, noticeably different in texture from the smooth dark fluid inside.
- Use the confirmed maternal side, not the screen edge. If all you have is an unlabelled printout, stop here: there is no dependable universal flip rule.
- Apply the rule: your right → boy, your left → girl.
Then hold the answer loosely: fun to have, and not a reason to paint a nursery or announce anything.
